Our class is called Riders Taking Action and it is a service learning class that has been in existence for four years. In this class, students volunteer to donate 40 hours of their time serving our community. This class of 40 seniors also picks one project each semester to complete together. This semester our chosen project is microfinancing through a website called kiva.org. Microfinancing is the revolutionary system of making small loans to up and coming business people in the developing world. These loans can be transformative not only for the business person, but the community at large. This program has been wildly successful in several developing countries, especially in Bangladesh and India. We will loan this money, which will be repaid, and continually reinvested in future projects.
