John Carroll students painted a house and cleaned up debris in New Orleans over Christmas break in January 2008. Fifteen students and two faculty advisors spent six days working at various sites around the city. We were surprised to still see evidence of flooding, including water marks on the sides of buildings three feet above ground level, more than 15 months after hurricane Katrina. The city remains in recovery mode and seems vacant in parts, as many of their residents have not moved back to their former neighborhoods.
We saw many student volunteer groups from other colleges helping out around the city. We spent time getting to know students from our fellow Jesuit school, Loyola University of New Orleans. They helped in guiding us to areas of the city that were in need of volunteers.
It was a very worthwhile experience for our group and the people that we helped were very appreciative. We hope that more groups from John Carroll University can volunteer over future Christmas and Spring breaks. PLEASE VOTE FOR OUR PROJECT!!! John Carroll will use the prize money to enable future students to "make a difference" in a community in need.
