John Carroll University's SIFE team developed the project "Capital Markets 101" in the fall of 2008. In addition, this project was initiated by a seminar sponsored by The Goldman Sachs Foundation. John Carroll’s SIFE team was 1 of 45 teams selected in the United States to attend this seminar in Dallas, Texas. Goldman Sachs funded the seminar that trained train SIFE teams in China, France and the United States to teach high school students in their local communities concepts related to capital markets and capital formation.
After attending the seminar in Dallas, John Carroll’s team developed a six month plan that included several stages to reach the team’s goal. The first stage included the development of an oral presentation for local high schools. Once these presentations were completed the students filled out a survey. Since, the presentation was performed in areas with different demographics; the team was able to prevent biased results. This survey along with advice from teachers was used to develop an interactive website. The site, www.capitalmarkets101.com, has two main audiences it targets. First, the site targets students who want to learn more about capital markets and second, teachers who want to use the site as a tool for the classroom.
The website includes a general introduction of the capital markets, but allows students to learn to the degree they wish. Within the site, there is an education page that can be used to do research on capital markets. In addition, a quiz can be issued by a teacher to see if his or her students understand the material. The site does not stop with knowledge expansion, it allows students to apply their knowledge to real world situations. They can calculate compound interest, test their trading ability through a market stimulation, or even learn how to select a fiancial advisor.
In addition, the John Carroll SIFE team raised money through corporate sponsors to issue a scholarship to a high school student. The team plans to continue raising money through online advertisements and corporate sponsorships. The team’s goal is to issue four $500 scholarships annually.
Since the site has been launched in March 2009 it has had over 1,150 hits by students and teachers. The team has seen the success of its site through emails and blog post from both students and teachers. Our team is dedicated to moving forward to expand the knowledge of students nationwide.
