This was the first year that Folsom Lake College Students in Free Enterprise participated in the VITA Program offering free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $54,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Our students ranging in age from 18-30 trained to become certified volunteers to help prepare basic tax returns in our community. The sites we prepared returns at included the college, an affordable housing project and a senior assisted living center.
Our site helped clients with special credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit for which they qualified. In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, we encouraged electronic filing (e-filing). Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper and even faster if they have their refund deposited directly into their bank account.
